Pool removal in Martin County

A pool removal is decided by how the machine reaches the backyard. In parts of Martin County that means crossing landscape a town expects back intact, or trees a town permits one at a time.

An empty outdoor swimming pool with stained tiles and green growth along the edges.

Sewall's Point requires a tree permit to remove any tree of 2 inches caliper or more, and heavy hat-racking counts as removal. On Jupiter Island, the pre-demolition certification for buildings and structures requires sidewalks, roads, utilities and landscape to be protected, and damage can mean a held building permit or a bond. Confirm with the Town whether it applies to your pool.

The permit question varies by office. The county's demolition checklist does not mention pools, and the five municipalities run their own building departments, so we ask the office that covers the address what it wants and whether it requires compaction records for the fill.

Owners choose between two methods. One leaves the lower shell in place, cracks its floor so water can drain, and backfills it; the other lifts out every piece of shell so the yard can later carry a foundation.

Send photos of the pool, the deck and the side yard, and we will walk the access with you.

Work order

  1. Walk the yard, measure the access, and note trees and landscape in the path.
  2. Confirm the permit and any tree permit with the office that covers the address.
  3. File the Sunshine 811 notice.
  4. Drain the pool and have a licensed electrician and plumber disconnect the equipment.
  5. Break out the shell, partial or full, and haul the concrete.
  6. Backfill in compacted lifts and grade.

Where jobs slip

Common problems, and how each is controlled

A narrow side yard

Equipment has to fit between the house and the property line. We measure the gate and the side yard, lay protection mats, and size the machines to the route.

Fill that settles

Loose fill under a later patio or addition sinks. We place fill in compacted lifts, and we will say so when only a full removal suits a future foundation.

Groundwater against an empty shell

On low ground, such as Sewall's Point at about 7 feet of elevation, the water table can push on a drained pool. We drain in a controlled way and check the water level before the floor is opened.

Work others are licensed for

Electrical and plumbing disconnects at the pool equipment are done by licensed trades. Tree removal goes to a licensed tree service under any permit the town requires. Soil testing and a geotechnical report for a future foundation are separate work by a licensed engineer.

Questions

About pool removal

Do I need a tree permit to reach my pool in Sewall's Point?

If any tree of 2 inches caliper or more has to come out, yes. The Town requires a permit for that, and heavy hat-racking counts as removal. We plan the route around trees where the yard allows.

Is backfilling the pool enough, or does the whole shell have to go?

A partial fill-in suits a yard that will stay a yard. A full removal suits a lot that may hold an addition or a new house, since nothing of the shell remains. Ask the building office what records it wants, and we will price both.

What drives the cost of a demolition?

Six things move the number most: the building's size and construction, what the asbestos survey finds, the utility and septic work to coordinate, site access, debris weight, and what the permit office requires. We do not publish prices, because a guess is worse than none. Send the property survey and photos, and we return a written number after we walk the site.

Is there a job size you will not take?

No. Every kind of demolition gets a price from us, whether it is a single shed or to a multi-story building. On larger and coastal sites we self-perform dewatering, Support of Excavation and deep foundations, including in tidal ground, so the work below grade stays in our sequence instead of passing to another firm.

Is Romco licensed for this work?

Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor. That matters in Stuart, which since July 1, 2025 no longer accepts county Certificates of Competency and requires state registration or certification. Asbestos surveys, abatement, electrical, plumbing and tree work are licensed separately, and we coordinate the firms that hold those licenses.

The sequence

Six stages, start to closed permit

  1. Describe the job

Phone or use the form. Tell us the address, what comes down and what stays. Photos or a survey help.

  2. Site visit

We look at the structure, the live services, access for trucks, trees, the seawall or water's edge, and any association rules.

  3. Written scope with a price

Removal, protection, hauling and anything that hangs on the asbestos survey appear as separate lines.

  4. Notices, releases, permit

The licensed survey and FDEP notice where required, the utility releases, then the application to the correct office.

  5. Demolition and hauling

Work follows the agreed order, and debris goes to the county transfer facility in Palm City or another licensed site.

  6. Inspection and close

The final inspection passes and the permit closes, leaving a level lot or the shell you specified.
