Demolition across Martin County, place by place
A riverfront house in Sewall's Point, a four-story condo on Hutchinson Island and a farm building near Port Mayaca sit under different offices, different utilities and different ground. Each page below covers one place.

- StuartTwo Stuart districts, Downtown and East Stuart, joined the National Register on September 9, 2026. Listing alone does not bar a teardown, but the city code sets a 30-day wait on a historic structure, and 90 days outside R-1 and R-2 zoning. We confirm a building's status with the city before we price it.Demolition in Stuart →
- Palm CityPalm City lines the South Fork of the St. Lucie River between the Turnpike and the water. During Hurricane Ian, the swollen South Fork flooded Tropical Farms and Palm City Farms at high tide. A teardown near that edge is planned around wet ground before any machine is booked.Demolition in Palm City →
- Jensen BeachPineapple fields made Jensen the Pineapple Capital of the World by 1895, before fires in 1908 and 1910 took most of the town. Today the county permits everything here, from the high ground of Skyline Drive, near 70 feet, to lots a few feet above the Indian River Lagoon.Demolition in Jensen Beach →
- Hobe SoundGreek-god street names and cement streetlights along Dixie Highway are what survive of Picture City, the 1920s boom the 1928 hurricane ended. Hobe Sound is unincorporated, so the county issues its demolition permits, but its water and sewer come from SMRU, the utility the Town of Jupiter Island runs.Demolition in Hobe Sound →
- Port SalernoManatee Pocket made Port Salerno a fishing settlement in the 1920s, and fish houses and net racks once lined Dixie Highway. On October 9, 2024, two tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Milton, rated EF1 and EF2, struck here. A storm-damaged building in this community is a permit question before it is a demolition job.Demolition in Port Salerno →
- Hutchinson IslandMartin County's side of Hutchinson Island is mostly low-rise, because the county caps new buildings at four stories and 40 feet. Frances and Jeanne both came ashore at the island's south end in 2004. A teardown here is planned around the ocean, the cap and, often, a condo board.Demolition in Hutchinson Island →
- Jupiter IslandBefore a building comes down on Jupiter Island, the Town wants a Pre-Demolition Certification. Electric, water, phone, cable, propane, septic and A/C lines must be removed or disconnected by contractors registered with its own Building Department, and the inspection checks rodent control and the landscape buffer.Demolition in Jupiter Island →
- Sewall's PointWater covers about 2.95 of Sewall's Point's 4.13 square miles, with the St. Lucie River to the south and west and the Indian River Lagoon to the east. The town sits at roughly 7 feet of elevation, and its own Building Department applies the floodplain rules along with zoning and building codes.Demolition in Sewall's Point →
- IndiantownIndiantown's Village Building Division requires its own Demolition Asbestos and Lead Paint Notification Statement on every demolition and renovation, signed by the contractor. The form names the Martin County Health Department for asbestos notice and requires lead paint in buildings from before 1978 to be handled under 40 CFR 745.Demolition in Indiantown →
- Ocean BreezeEvery road in Ocean Breeze is private. The town began in 1938 as Harry Hoke's trailer park, incorporated in 1960 when 142 owners voted, and took its present name by referendum in 2013. It keeps its own permit office, which takes applications by email and is closed on Fridays.Demolition in Ocean Breeze →
- Unincorporated Martin CountyThree items make up the Martin County Building Department's demolition checklist, revision 2-26: the permit application, an owner/builder disclosure signed in front of county staff, and floor plans for a partial demolition. The short list is not the whole job. State asbestos, septic and utility rules still sit outside it.Demolition in Unincorporated Martin County →
- RioRio, said locally as Rye-oh, was platted as Rio St. Lucie and had a post office from 1893. Water makes up 58 percent of its 0.9 square miles on the north side of the St. Lucie River, across from Stuart, and county-funded sewers are replacing its septic tanks.Demolition in Rio →
- Golden GateIn 1925 the Golden Gate Building opened as the sales office for a 200-block subdivision, Martin County's first planned major residential development. The county bought it in 2002, and it reached the National Register in 2017. Around it, the Golden Gate redevelopment area is bringing water and sewer to lots south of Stuart.Demolition in Golden Gate →
- Port MayacaLake Okeechobee's east shore and the Port Mayaca Lock, where the St. Lucie Canal leaves the lake, define this corner of western Martin County. The Port Mayaca Cemetery holds the mass grave of more than 1,600 people killed in the 1928 hurricane. Homes are few, and a teardown here is a rural job.Demolition in Port Mayaca →
Questions
Demolition in Martin
Which office issues my demolition permit?
It depends on the address. Stuart, Jupiter Island, Sewall's Point, Ocean Breeze and Indiantown each run their own building departments. Everywhere else, including Palm City, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound and Port Salerno, the Martin County Building Department issues it from its office on SE Ruhnke Street in Stuart. We confirm the office from the parcel and file there.
Is an asbestos inspection required before a Martin teardown?
For most buildings, yes. FDEP requires a thorough inspection by a state-licensed consultant before any planned demolition it covers, and a notice to its Southeast District at least 10 working days ahead, even when no asbestos turns up. We arrange the survey with an independent licensed consultant and bring in a licensed abatement firm if needed. Romco does not abate asbestos.
Where in Martin County do you take work?
Across the whole county. That includes the five municipalities, Stuart, Jupiter Island, Sewall's Point, Ocean Breeze and Indiantown, and the unincorporated communities: Palm City, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Port Salerno, Rio, Golden Gate, Port Mayaca and the Martin side of Hutchinson Island. Romco is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, and we come to the site to walk it.
