Concrete removal in Martin County

Concrete removal looks simple until the saw meets a buried line. Florida law requires a Sunshine 811 notice at least 2 full business days before any excavation or demolition, and in Martin County that covers a driveway as much as a building.

Two workers' legs beside a jackhammer breaking up a paved surface, with a small generator nearby.

Broken concrete is construction and demolition debris. The county's Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Facility on SW Busch Street in Palm City takes concrete, asphalt, brick and steel from haulers who unload their own loads, with a disposal fee and business accounts.

Some islands restrict the noisy days. The Town of Jupiter Island allows Saturday work in summer by permission only and bars restricted equipment on Saturdays under its ordinance, so breaking there is planned for weekdays.

Thickness and steel drive the effort more than area. A driveway, a post-tension slab and an older commercial pad with heavy rebar each break differently, and we size the saw and the machine to what the edges show.

Send photos of the slab edges and a rough measurement, and we will price the removal.

Work order

  1. Measure the area and check the edges for thickness and reinforcement.
  2. File the Sunshine 811 notice and wait for the locate marks.
  3. Confirm whether the office that covers the address wants a permit for the scope.
  4. Sawcut the boundary and break out with a machine sized to the slab.
  5. Load and haul to a C&D facility.
  6. Grade and compact the subgrade to the agreed condition.

Where jobs slip

Common problems, and how each is controlled

Lines under the slab

Utilities often run under driveways and patios. We file the 811 ticket, wait for the marks, and hand-dig near any located line.

Post-tension tendons

Cutting a stressed tendon releases its load at once. We identify post-tension slabs from drawings or markings before any saw cut, and bring in an engineer where needed.

Crushed edges on what stays

Pavers, curbs and planting beside the work suffer under careless loading. We set the haul path, plate the edges, and sawcut a clean boundary.

Work others are licensed for

Private lines that 811 does not mark, such as irrigation and private electrical runs, may need a private locator we coordinate. Engineering for post-tension or structural slabs is done by a licensed engineer. Replacement concrete is not part of this scope unless it is priced separately.

Questions

About concrete removal

Where does broken concrete go in Martin County?

The county's Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Facility in Palm City accepts concrete, brick, asphalt and other construction and demolition debris, with a disposal fee and business accounts. Private C&D facilities are another outlet, and we choose one when we price the haul.

Do I need an 811 ticket just for a patio?

Florida's statute covers any excavation or demolition, with notice at least 2 full business days before work begins. We file the ticket on every removal we perform.

What drives the cost of a demolition?

Six things move the number most: the building's size and construction, what the asbestos survey finds, the utility and septic work to coordinate, site access, debris weight, and what the permit office requires. There is no published rate card, because a guess is worse than none. Send the property survey and photos, and we return a written number after we walk the site.

Is there a job size you will not take?

No. Every kind of demolition gets a quote from us, whether it is a single shed or to a multi-story building. On larger and coastal sites we self-perform dewatering, Support of Excavation and deep foundations, including in tidal ground, so the work below grade stays in our sequence instead of passing to another firm.

Is Romco licensed for this work?

Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor. That matters in Stuart, which since July 1, 2025 no longer accepts county Certificates of Competency and requires state registration or certification. Asbestos surveys, abatement, electrical, plumbing and tree work are licensed separately, and we coordinate the firms that hold those licenses.

The sequence

Six stages, start to closed permit

  1. Describe the job

Phone or use the form. Tell us the address, what comes down and what stays. Photos or a survey help.

  2. Site visit

We look at the structure, the live services, access for trucks, trees, the seawall or water's edge, and any association rules.

  3. A written scope and quote

Removal, protection, hauling and anything that hangs on the asbestos survey appear as separate lines.

  4. Notices, releases, permit

The licensed survey and FDEP notice where required, the utility releases, then the application to the correct office.

  5. Demolition and hauling

Work follows the agreed order, and debris goes to the county transfer facility in Palm City or another licensed site.

  6. Inspection and close

The final inspection passes and the permit closes, leaving a level lot or the shell you specified.
